It pays to prepare

I had the opportunity to spend time with a man as he was dying this year. He had Parkinson’s for 14 years so his family had time to prepare for his death. He knew the Lord. While it was painful to see him go, it’s a comfort to know he’s no longer in pain. He’s in the arms of Jesus right now, waiting for you and me. read more »

Spring is coming

Sometimes barren trees make me sad. But then I remember spring and the buds that will soon form on the trees, and it makes me smile. Yes, it’s winter. The stretch after Christmas is the hardest for me to take. But knowing that spring is coming makes me smile. Buds, birds, butterflies. Flowers, rain showers and green grass.

What a picture of the sadness the disciples felt when Christ was buried…and the heights of joy they experienced when they saw Him risen. It’s Friday but Sunday’s coming. The cross didn’t have the last word. The tomb is empty and death is conquered. We are victors in Christ, for his victory is ours! Winter is not the final word – eternal spring is on the way. read more »

Time to take down the old calendar

As New Year approaches, I'm always glad for the organizations that chose to send me a calendar year after year. Yes, it has their logo across the top but I don’t mind. It’s a jolt to the system to have to take down the old calendar and put up a new one. That’s the moment I can’t deny it: another year really has come and gone. Time. One day in heaven we won’t have it anymore, but until then, the years keep on ticking by almost as fast as seconds on a grandfather clock.  read more »

Celebrate Life in Christ

My parents didn’t celebrate Christmas when I was a boy. They considered it pagan. I see their perspective but as an adult I enjoy celebrating the coming of the long-awaited Messiah. Julie and I even put out cookies for Santa when our kids were little. The kids knew it was a joke and so did we. We have been careful to teach them that Santa “does not see them when they are sleeping. He does not know when they are awake.” But Jesus does. Santa doesn’t care for them, but Jesus does. Santa never brought one person a present, but God brought us the best present in the world when He sent His Son to the little town of Bethlehem. This present would grow up and die to pay for our sin. He would be buried and rise again the third day to give us life.read more »

Sleeping Dog

Sometimes when I write late at night, our dog Sammy comes and curls up on the ottoman at my feet. Sound asleep, he just likes being by me. I sometimes stare at him and wonder that our love and trust for God should be at least that deep. He obviously has not a single care. Not one worry furrows his brow. Except for the occasional “rabbit chasing dream” he is about as content as I can imagine any creature being. His needs are met: he has food and water. He’s in a dry place. And best of all, he’s right beside the master that makes it all possible. read more »

Damaged Furniture

broken plateIn our recent move, only one little dish was broken. Not too bad for a 500-mile move. Thanks to the guys who helped us move for being careful. And thanks to Julie and her friends for packing carefully with padding in the boxes. read more »

New Comforter

mattressWe can’t get our daughter’s queen size box spring up the steps to her bedroom. It’s a beautiful room, and spacious, but the steps are a bit tight going up to it. So she has been sleeping on her mattress on the floor. Jamie and I tried to get the box spring up there again this morning. Score: box spring, 2. Us: 0. The funny thing is, we just let her get a new queen size comforter and she threw away the packaging already. So if we get her a smaller bed, her comforter will be too big.read more »

Move to Ohio

OhioGod has blessed our family in many ways this year. After many wonderful years at Victory In Grace in Chicago, God opened a door in Ohio for me to pastor a church. I'm still working with Victory In Grace, doing estate design work. We moved here a few weeks ago and are still settling in. There are a few more pieces of furniture that need to be assembled and a couple more rooms to paint. But all in all, it was a very smooth move. Our new church family made it much easier by cleaning our new home perfectly before we got here and moving all our stuff from Chicago to Ohio. Great people!read more »
