Today’s Scripture: Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. Matthew 9:38

Last fall, Julie and I went on a drive to see the colors. The route we drove was through the far side of the county where we had rarely driven before. It was beautiful. The leaves were at their peak color. We met nice people at the various stops and even took a walk along a shady lane with the sun’s rays slanting through breaks in the vibrant orange leaves.

At one point in the drive, we came around a bend and noticed a church with a for sale sign tacked over the original church sign. Upon closer inspection, the sign said, “No trespassing. For Sale by Owner.”

This made such an impression on me, I stopped and took a picture. It’s a sad picture with the sign in the foreground and the abandoned church in the background.

While I recognize the truth that the people are the church, not the building, it’s also true that a healthy church uses its building to spread the gospel. Healthy churches don’t sell their buildings after neglecting them for years.

I found these stats. For every church that starts in America, two close their doors forever. Did you know that four out of five churches that are still in existence today have either plateaued or are declining in attendance? There are fewer churches in America today, per capita than at any other time in history.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know this ends badly.

We need young people who are passionate about Jesus and eager to fulfill the great commission by planting churches and sharing the gospel. Dayspring Bible College and Seminary, where Julie and I graduated and where our two children attend, is training the next generation of workers to go out into the harvest. Maybe consider helping Dayspring Bible College and Seminary financially so that young people can go and win the world for Jesus. God wants to use you in His harvest. All you have to do is let Him work through you.
