Today’s Scripture: Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

The son of a New England farmer, John, had erred in his ways while at college. He created some huge gambling debts. In order to pay off his debt, he forged a check with the name of his father’s friend. He was caught, tried, and convicted. On his way to prison, he overcame the deputy and ran away. The heart-broken father decided he would do whatever he could in order to get his son back. He gathered enough money to pay off his son’s debt and secured a pardon from the governor. He then gave a couple thousand dollars to the deputy that his son had overcome and hired him to locate him. The father instructed, “When you find him, hand him the pardon from the governor and give him this letter.” After searching, the deputy found him in San Francisco at a gambling hall with only one entrance and exit. As soon as John saw the deputy, he tried to bolt past him. He crashed into the deputy, who grabbed him and held on for dear life. He finally got enough breath to say, “I’m not here to arrest you, I’m here to give you a pardon.” John read the pardon and exclaimed, “There’s no way I can go back. I’ve done terrible things, and my father will never accept me!”

It was then that the deputy handed him the father’s letter, which read: “My dear boy, the miserable debt is paid. The governor has pardoned you. Your old father has never ceased to love and long for you and freely forgives you. Come home to me.” With tears in his eyes, John finally decided to return home.”

Like John, we as believers make big mistakes and sometimes feel too ashamed to come before our Lord. But, no matter what we’ve done, these truths are here in our Heavenly Father’s letter to us through His Holy Word:

  1. You are established like a plant whose deep roots provide the nourishment and security to continue to produce fruit. (Proverbs 12:3, Jeremiah 17:78)

  2. You are anointed as a high priest—set apart and very special to God. (1 John 2:27)
  1. You are sealed. The spirit of God in you is the seal that cannot be broken! No one can tamper with your eternity. (John 3:33)

  2. You are bought. You have the earnest of the spirit in your heart. When God puts down earnest, you can take that to the bank. You are His. (Ephesians 1:1314)Perhaps you feel hopeless and ashamed right now. Remember, your heavenly Father is waiting with open arms to welcome you back into His presence. Friend, no matter what you have done, as a believer, you are in Christ and all of these truths apply to you. Today, ask for your Father’s forgiveness, and claim all those incredible blessings that are waiting for you.
