Today's Scripture: Joshua 2:1-21; 6:22-24
One of the most poignant stories in all of Scripture is the story of Rahab, a harlot who became a hero and helped save Israel. News of God's miraculous delivery of Israel from the Egyptians and the parting of the Red Sea came to Rahab and her family. They came to faith in the God of Israel, Jehovah, and then became part of the heritage of Israel.
Rahab's story is a portrait of God's grace. Of all the valuable assets in the mighty Jericho, God chose to spare only an unwanted harlot. Not the scientists, the athletes, the doctors, the lawyers, the artists. Why? Because Rahab came to God in a simple faith.
This story is a beautiful picture of the gospel story. See, you and I are like Rahab. Before a holy and righteous God, we're no better than a prostitute, a murderer, a thief. We have nothing of value to offer God. And yet He reached down in love, sending Jesus Christ to the cross, to pay for our sins.
Interestingly, there were a lot better people than Rahab who perished in the flames. Moral, upstanding citizens. Nevertheless, their goodness did them no good, because they refused to acknowledge their sinfulness and need for a Savior. Heaven will be filled with undeserving people like Rahab. People like you. People like me.
Today's Quote: I am not what I ought to be; I am not what I wish to be; I am not what I hope to be; but by the grace of God I am what I am. —John Newton
