Judging Motives

Today's Scripture: Matthew 7:1

I recently read something on marriage. A pastor was talking about his relationship with his wife and it was so good, I wanted to share it with you.

This man said whenever his wife says something which offends him, he remembers that she loves him and no matter how her words might have come out, she wouldn’t intentionally do anything to hurt him. It helps to prevent him from reacting in anger. Instead, he tries to take some time to collect his thoughts before gently saying something like, "Honey, I know you didn’t mean it this way, but here’s how it sounded to me."

What if we carried that principle into all of our relationships? So often the jealousies, grudges, and anger that so often arise between people stems from an improper judging of motives. But, only God truly knows someone’s heart. That’s why we have to learn to trust those we love—even when words or even actions seem to point to something different.

I’m going to challenge you to try this in all of your relationships. At home, at work, at church. Give those you love the benefit of the doubt before succumbing to hurt feelings.

And maybe, just maybe they’ll do the same for you.
