Today's Scripture: Hebrews 13:5
How can a Christian be content in a consumerist culture? I'd like to share 5 practical pointers.
1) Keep your material expectations low. So often we say, "I deserve that new car" or "I deserve that promotion." Paul had a different approach. He was willing to be without luxuries, but he also rejoiced when he was blessed with them. (Phil 4:2)
2) Remember that this world is not our home. Its so tempting to want to build little kingdoms on this earth but everything we see will one day be remade by God. Real treasure, lasting worth, is not found on earth, but in Heaven. (Matthew 6:19)
3) Rejoice when others are blessed. This is probably the hardest thing to do in our competitive culture. But the Bible says to "rejoice with them that rejoice and weep with them that weep." So when your neighbor pulls up with a brand-new SUV, be happy.
4) Remember your worth is not determined by what you have. God loves you no matter how big your bank account, despite the age of your car, and in spite of your position. His love is based on His character. And it never changes. (Romans 8:38-39)
5) If you're an American, remember you're living in the top 1% of people everywhere. Most of the world lives in abject poverty.
