When People Fail You

Today's Scripture: Genesis 39:7-20
Joseph knew what it was like to be betrayed by someone he loved. In fact, everyone let him down. His own brothers resented him so much that they contemplated killing him and ended up selling him into slavery. And even his father, who loved him dearly, didn’t do anything to protect him from them.
Then he goes to Egypt and works his way up to master of Potiphar’s house. Today, that would be similar to being chief of staff to a powerful Congressman or Senator, maybe even the White House. And just when Joseph thought he could trust people again, Potiphar fails him.
It’s hard when we’re let down by those we admire and love. But it teaches us that we should not put our confidence in men, but in God. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t respect and admire those in authority over us, but we have to remember that they are humans just like we are. They will fail us time and time again. And we will fail those who look up to us.
It is God who never fails us. God who always seeks our best interest. It is in His goodness that we can place our ultimate trust.
Today's Quote: People, even the greatest, godliest, most sincere, will always, always fail you. But God never fails.—Dr. James A. Scudder
