Jethro, a Good In-law

Today's Scripture: Exodus 18

There’s more than a kernel of truth behind many of the wisecracks people make about their in-laws. Family relationships can be sticky and sensitive. I don’t have to explain it—you already know and can think of situations you’d rather avoid.

Which is why I find Moses’ relationship with his father-in-law so refreshing. What a gift Jethro was for Moses and his ministry! Jethro could have been overprotective, looming over Moses’ shoulder at every turn. But he wasn’t that at all. Not only did he bless the marriage of his daughter to Moses, he also willingly let Moses follow God’s calling into Egypt.

Losing his son-in-law who had worked for him for 40 years probably had a significant effect on Jethro’s business. But Jethro trusted God and released Moses to the will of God.

Then, when Moses led Israel into Canaan, who came to refresh Moses and give him wise advice? Jethro. He had heard what God had done in rescuing Israel from Egypt. He wanted to be part of God’s action. He was also proud of his son-in-law.

And so Moses was overjoyed to see Jethro as he entered the camp of Israel. He was more than family. He was a friend and mentor.

As an in-law, perhaps you can be a refreshment to your sons or daughters in- law. Maybe you can be a Jethro to them today.
