Today's Scripture: 1 Samuel 19:1-6
It’s easy to say something negative about a person when they are not present. We’re all prone to starting or feeding a gossip chain in the breakroom, in the pew at church, or even at family gatherings. Sometimes we’ll even burn up the phone lines or email with our latest bits of juicy information.
But rare is it that someone will say something good behind a friend’s back. That’s how you know they are a true friend. A loyal friend. A friend worth fighting for.
This was Jonathan. Jonathan had everything to lose and nothing to gain by standing up to his father, Saul and defending David. Jonathan could have kept quiet as his enraged father ordered the death squads to David’s door. After all, Jonathan was next in line to the throne. History is full of royal backstabbing and betrayal.
Jonathan was no ordinary prince. He was a man who knew his place and trusted God completely. And he loved David like a brother. He was a true friend, so he risked life and limb to stand up for David—against his own father. That takes courage. More importantly, it takes a kind of selfless loyalty.
How about you? Are you willing to stand up for people you believe in—even if it costs you something? If so, you’re a true friend.
