Today's Scripture: Philippians 4:13

Fifty-six-year-old Luke hesitantly stepped on the scale. “Why do I even bother?” he muttered. “I have been praying for help ever since I set this goal to lose weight, and I haven’t lost a single pound.”

Only six months ago he had been diagnosed with diabetes. For months he had been trying to get his weight down only to step on the scale every week the same weight as the last time. Frustrated and discouraged he forced himself to step on the scale, expecting to see the same results.

“What?!” Luke looked down at the numbers in shock—he had lost two pounds. A huge smile spread across his face. Although it was only a couple pounds, he felt encouraged that his goal to lose weight was not impossible after all.

Sometimes we feel frustrated about our Christian lives just like Luke. When we get hit with something unexpected or are failing at reaching a goal, we are often tempted to give up. In our text, we are told that we can do all things through Christ. Even when things feel impossible, we can be encouraged that it can be done, not through our strength but through God’s.

Do you feel as if you can’t handle your problems or meet your goals? You may be a senior struggling with health problems like diabetes or a teen trying to get good grades in school. Whatever your struggle, give it to the only One Who can handle it. When you do, you won’t be afraid to step on the scale.

We judge of things by their present appearances, but the Lord sees them in their consequences. — John Newton
