Reflect to Advance

It’s the last week of 2009. 51 weeks, 361 days, 8,664 hours, 519,840 minutes, and 31,190,400 seconds have elapsed. How did you spend your time this year?

If you could rewind back to the beginning of this year, what things might you have done differently? What things would you do again? What things do you regret doing?

Perhaps you started a new hobby, tried a different career, changed the format of your monthly magazine (we did at VIG!), finished college, got married, or retired. . .

Maybe you led someone to Christ, worked at a homeless shelter, or served the needy at a food pantry. . .

Maybe you lost your savings in the stock market, your job was terminated, you had a falling out with a friend, or you had trouble selling your house. . .

Of those things you would do again, how many of them had any spiritual significance?

For those circumstances you regret, what would you have done differently to reverse the outcome?

What has transpired in these 361 days is locked in the past. The actions are irreversible. I say this not to make you feel guilty, but to encourage you: Though you cannot change the past, the future is up to you.

After considering the brevity of life, Moses prayed, So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. (Psalms 90:12)

Here’s a few things you might want to remember for 2010:

1. Make an earnest attempt to repeat the successes and avoid the failures of yesteryear.
2. Keep your eyes upon Christ (Hebrews 12:2).
3. Keep moving forward (Philippians 3:13-14).

Strive to make 2010 your best year ever.
