Q&A with Dr. James A. Scudder

Q&A with Dr. James A. Scudder Q.— What does Scripture mean by the phrase, “Faith, if it hath not works, is dead?” Are we not saved by faith alone?

A.—The phrase, Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone, is found in James 2:17. When we become confused on a particular portion of Scripture, the best course of action is to look at the verses before and after the one in question. By taking the verse in context, we can cast light on the topic we are confused about. Let’s look at the surrounding verses:

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. (James 2:14-18)

Notice this passage is addressed to brethren. A person can only be counted one of the brethren after he has been saved. Therefore, this passage is speaking to believers and does not refer to salvation. Rather, it is addressing Christian service and discipleship.

Imagine for a moment, a neighbor comes to you with a need for food and clothing. They have been without a job for five months and are unable to afford what they need. You know you can help them, but it might strain your finances a little bit. So you simply tell them, “I will pray the Lord provides for you,” and you continue on your way.

The prayer you offer on their behalf will not be honored by the Lord. It will not further your growth or discipleship. Why? God placed you in that person’s path with the ability to help, but you neglected the opportunity to do His work. God works through means and many times those means are us.

When we refuse to do God’s work, the world will see nothing but dead faith. They will only see another person concerned with their own needs. With no acts of Christian service on our behalf, what will compel a lost and dying world to seek Christ?

We must show Christ’s love and compassion. We must show faith that is alive through our works.
