Today's Scripture: Revelation 2:1-6
When John, under the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, penned these words to the church at Ephesus, "Thou has left thy first love," I’m sure it pained him. John had a real connection with these people, who were known for their dedication to the truth in an age of heresy. They were commended for their hard-working spirit and outreach.
But there was something missing. These were second generation Christians. The generation before had come to faith in Christ and boldly lived out their faith. They were zealous in evangelism, excited about God’s power in their lives and fervent in prayer.
The next generation was just as dedicated to the truth and just as busy. But the fire was gone. Church had become a ritual. Faith had become an identity. God had become a program.
This happens in churches. It happens in the lives of believers. If we’re not careful, we lose our zeal. We lose the joy we felt when we first came to Christ.
Is this you? Have you lost your first love? Has Christianity become more of a ritual than a relationship?
If so, it’s time to get on your knees and ask God to rekindle the fire of your first love.
