Envy in a Church

Today's Scripture: James 3:16

Envy is one of Satan’s most effective weapons in undermining the work of a church. Author Douglas Wilson writes, " Envy knows how to disguise itself as many different virtues, dear to the hearts of Pharisees everywhere. Envy can readily appear as a zeal for orthodoxy, or righteous indignation, or a concern for the poor, or high musical standards for the choir, or as missional concern. But however it appears, it is quickly and necessarily the source of conflict."

Every Christian is a target for envy. Every believer can be used by the devil to undermine God’s work. That’s why the New Testament constantly warns us to guard our hearts.

I’ve seen many talented believers fall to the wayside because they thought they weren’t being used enough in their churches or that their gifts were being misapplied. Instead of trusting God, they allowed their jealousy of others to eat at their souls. Pride won’t just destroy your own soul, it will motivate you to work against the people God has called you to serve.

Pride is at the root of every church split, every heated dis agreement, and every whispering campaign. Don’t let yourself become caught up in it.

Instead, ask God to help you be loyal, faithful, and humble in the service of the church.

Today's Quote:  Envy kills. It begins with a sneaky root of bit terness and if left unchecked grows into a giant mass that can destroy the life of the soul.
