Today's Scripture: John 15:1-7

Most people I know don’t use a live Christmas tree anymore. They used to when their children were young. They would trek out to the farms in rural areas and get their tree and set it up.

Of course, keeping the tree looking good after that point wasn’t always easy. One family put aspirin in their tree water, they’d heard that aspirin helped it to stay fresh. Then they tried sugar, then salt. All of this was supposed to help the tree. But nothing helped that year. Why? Because the tree was cut off from the roots.

We have to be careful that we don’t allow this to happen in our Christian lives. Perhaps you’ve stayed away from church too long. Of you haven’t had much time to get in your Bible. Maybe you’ve been so busy doing your Christmas shopping, you haven’t had much time to pray.

Why don’t you take a few minutes right now to write a list of things you can do to keep your spiritual roots deep and flourishing? Perhaps start attending a local church or try to make it to more services. Maybe you need to set aside an upcoming morning or afternoon to get alone with the Lord and read His Word. It could be that you need to make more of an effort to have prayer be a regular part of your day.

To stay healthy as a believer, keep your roots healthy.
