Today's Scripture: Habakkuk 1-3

As another election season moves closer into our orbit, it’s easy to get drawn into the almost daily campaign news. Whether it’s on the internet, TV, or radio, pundits are everywhere, predicting who will be up and who will be down and who will ultimately become our next U.S. President.

As Americans, we have a wonderful opportunity to help shape our government— a right not given to most people around the world. And yet, if we’re not careful, we can quickly fall under the spell of political power. If we could just get so-and-so elected, we could change this country. But, as we see in our study of Habakkuk, it’s really God Who allows leaders to rise and fall.

God raised up the Chaldeans, an evil and ruthless country, to overpower Israel, punishing them for their rebellion against the Almighty. Even as Israel was fl aunting its wickedness and perceived power, God was raising up this other country. All the political machinations and military victories couldn’t prevent God’s will from taking place.

We can take great comfort in knowing that God is sovereign in the affairs of governments. God raises up leaders and casts them down.

That’s why we can rest, even when wicked people assume power. Why? Because our God’s agenda never gets off course.

Today's Quote:  For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. Psalms 75:6
