Today's Scripture: Luke 2:21-35
In 1992, a lighthouse was built in Santo Domingo, capitol of the Dominican Republic. This is one of the poorest areas in the world. The lighthouse was constructed to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
150,000 people were evicted from their homes in a shantytown to make room for it. The intensity of its light means that electricity is rationed throughout much of the city. The light that brings security for some brings distress for others.
When Jesus came to this earth and Simeon held him in his arms, he knew two things. First, he knew that for sure he held the Messiah, the Savior of the world. But he also knew some thing else. Something the Holy Spirit revealed to him.
The Messiah would be the light for the world. Many would be blessed and rejoice in that new glow. But when Simeon handed the child back to Mary, he said that the baby would also be pierced. And that her own soul would be pierced as well.
Even in the events surrounding Jesus’ birth, the Holy Spirit was clear that Jesus had a bigger purpose than just being born. One day, He would die.
But through His death and resurrection, He would pay for the sin debt of the world.
