Leave or Linger?

Today's Scripture: 2 Samuel 11:2-5

“Our first reaction to temptation determines whether we will travel down sin’s road or escape its snare. At times, men such as David have fought sin valiantly. On other occasions, however, they succumbed to its allure.

The moon glistened in the cool evening. The streets of Jerusalem lay silent, for her men had departed on a military campaign. Meanwhile, King David lingered behind. Maybe he was sick or tired. We don’t know why he chose to stay in Jerusalem. But we do know what happened afterward.

David arose from his bed and took a stroll atop the roof of his house. He saw a woman bathing. The Bible says she was beautiful to look upon. Here was the temptation. Would David leave or linger? His decision to linger rushed him down the bitter road to sin.

Sexual temptation is prevalent in our culture today. The latest TV shows, fashion magazines, and the internet all promote immorality. There’s no way to get around it—temptation will exist as long as we possess an old nature. The question is, how will we respond when it comes?

When temptation comes knocking, will you leave the scene, or will you linger? Whether man or woman, boy or girl, God has given you the ability to resist. Determine your response in advance. Leave now, and you won’t have to pay later.

Today's Quote: Temptation usually comes in through a door that has deliberately been left open. —Unknown Author
