If you knew a lost person had five minutes left to live before they entered eternity, what would you tell them? Would it make any difference how famous or important they were?

The Scottish preacher, Robert Murray M’Cheyne, was passing out gospel tracts one day, when he came to a well-dressed woman. She gave him a haunting look and said, “Sir, you must not know who I am.”

Robert answered, “There is a coming day of judgment, and it will not make any difference.”

If we had this perspective as we shared our faith with others, we wouldn’t be intimidated by their wealth or social status. Whether a person is the company’s CEO or a next-door neighbor, they need to hear the gospel. There is coming a day of judgment, and it won’t make any difference to God who they were on Earth. As God’s representatives to the world, it’s our responsibility to share the good news with everyone we can.

You may know some people in high places who need to hear the gospel. God could be calling you to reach them for Christ. Your boss, your landlord, a local business owner, your personal banker, your lawyer, your doctor — do you think it’s a mistake that God has put these people in your life? Of course not. There is coming a day of judgment, and God will not judge these people on the basis of their occupation or income. He sees them as sinners who deserve to pay the penalty for missing His mark. You may be the only one standing between them and an eternity in Hell. Let this be a challenge for you to faithfully share Christ, no matter who is on the receiving end.

The rich man had no desire for money. He didn’t care for better living conditions. He didn’t want better food — just a drop of water. Standing at the threshold of death, he could not experience its sweet release, for his torment was eternal. In Hell his wealth meant nothing. His sprawling estate no longer set him apart as a respected member of his community. The orders he gave to summon his servants amounted to nothing more than idle talk. Hell had stripped him of the status he enjoyed on Earth. The emotional torment of his debasing predicament was rivaled only by the physical agony of the flames which engulfed him, and so he begged for the only thing which offered relief — water.

But the man discovered his intense thirst could not be quenched in Hell. Suddenly, he thought of others who would join him. He had five brothers, and unless they put their trust in Jesus Christ, they, too, would suffer in this eternal flame. He became a soul-winner, and longed that someone might warn them. But his evangelistic zeal profited him nothing. He had chosen the eternal, fiery judgment of Hell when he rejected Jesus Christ as his Savior, and he could not reverse his decision. Someone else would have to send the light.

Billions like this rich man have since experienced the same torment. Their voices are calling, pleading, that someone — anyone — would warn their friends and loved ones of the terrors of Hellfire before it is too late.

As the lost plead from below in eternal torment, God summons us from above, and His Spirit calls from within our hearts. Have you been listening?

I hope that you will not refuse to heed the call. God desires that everyone be saved, and you have a part to play in reaching them. Make an effort to send the Light of Christ to a lost person today — their eternity hangs in the balance.
