Have you ever seen the show, Touched by an Angel? Well, Mary experienced it firsthand. And it couldn’t have happened to a better person. I can almost see her now as she faithfully performs errands for her mother in the house. Washing dishes, grinding corn, baking fresh, unleavened bread—you name it, Mary can do it all. She would make a wonderful wife for Joseph. But in the middle of her errands, she is startled to see a bright figure standing before her. He says, “Hail, thou that art highly favored . . .” I can see her jaw almost hit the floor as she stands there, speechless. God had something special planned for her.
Mary was probably very mature for her age and she possessed a godly spirit. Her heart caught God’s attention. Her inner beauty reached the heart of God.
In today’s culture, we emphasize the external. I’m not merely referring to appearance, but also abilities. If we can balance a leadership position at church, a family with children, our mortgage payments, a full-time job, along with membership at the local gym, we think God is impressed. Though God grants you diverse skills, His primary concern is your heart.
Do you want to be highly favored in God’s eyes? Pray that He would help you be who He wants you to be, so you can do what you need to do.
See that your chief study be about your heart, that there God’s image may be planted, and His interest advanced. — Richard Baxter
