|Today’s Scripture: …quit you like men,… 1 Corinthians 16:13c|
|The children ran through the forest with their flashlights. They zigzagged through the trees looking for the bright yellow eyes of a reclusive snipe. After a while, they slowly wandered back to camp with nothing to show for their exhaustive search. Finally, they realized that they had been duped.
Snipe hunts are a great way to illustrate how children are easily led astray. Their inexperience and ignorance make them gullible to believe and act on whatever they are told. Ephesians 4:14 tells us, “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;” We need to be mature so that we are not deceived and follow those who seek to deceive us.
“Quit you like men” means to “show yourself as a man; to be an adult”. Or in today’s vernacular, it means, “Grow up.” So many people are immature. We shouldn’t be like that; we need to grow up. Maturity is self-control. As you mature, you have more control over yourself, you’re more thoughtful in your decision making, and you have a greater appreciation for the things you have and for those who have given to you. So many Christians are immature, and they don’t realize the destiny that God has for them. They don’t ever succeed in life because they are stuck in spiritual infancy.
Part of growing up is switching from milk to meat. The Apostle Paul had to deal with the Corinthians because they weren’t growing. He said in 1 Corinthians 3 that he had fed them with milk because they were “babes in Christ” and not able to bear the meat of the Word because they were carnal.
We need to grow up so that we can be successful in our service for Christ. We have an opportunity to serve the Creator of the Universe Who came to die in our place. Let’s not be led astray to follow after things that are as foolish and imaginary like the snipe.
