Today’s Scripture: But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation¬†21:8

Most people, when asked if they would go to Heaven, respond with “I think so. I’ve been pretty good. I haven’t killed anyone,” or “I’m a good person so I think I’ll make it,” or something along those lines. We like to compare ourselves to others who make us look good in comparison. We minimize our faults by looking for the big faults in others.

Most people would look at this list and say, “The abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters deserve to go to Hell.” Somehow, we read right over anything that applies to us.

Unbelief is what keeps everyone from going to Heaven. God has offered salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. If we trust that His death paid the price for our sin, we can have eternal life. God has offered it to everyone, but if we don’t accept His payment for our sins, then we will have to pay for them ourselves in Hell. God doesn’t want this, and that is why He sent His Son to die.

The problem is that many people try to get to Heaven based on their goodness, or their lack of extremely wicked living. However, we are all sinners. Our sin cannot enter Heaven because Heaven is perfect. If sin entered Heaven, it would no longer be perfect. Therefore, all of our sins must be gone to go to Heaven.

People look around them and see wickedness in others but fail to see their own shortcomings. We see the wickedness this verse talks about and think they should go to Hell because of what they have done without realizing we deserve Hell as well.

Our verse doesn’t stop with murderers, sorcerers, and idolaters. Instead, it includes the fearful and all liars. If we look around us, we will see fear everywhere – even in ourselves. People are afraid of almost everything. One of the biggest fears is the fear of death. Because people don’t know Christ, they are afraid of what happens after death. But why is fear a sin? It is because fear is the opposite of faith. Romans¬†14:23b says, “For whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” If we fear, it is because we don’t trust God to work it out. Any fear is a disbelief in the power of God. We are all fearful at times so we all deserve Hell. Likewise, we have all lied. None of us has lived a life of complete honesty. Therefore, we deserve Hell just as much as those who have killed, practiced witchcraft, or idolatry.

God has provided the payment for our sins. Christ died so you could live with Him in Heaven. Accept His payment for your sins today, because although they may not seem as wicked, they’re just as damning.
