Today’s Scripture: And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Acts 13:22

If you could choose one thing from the life of David that best describes this man, which would you choose? Some of us would point to his victory over Goliath. Others remember him for the Psalms. Most of us, however, think of David as the king who committed a terrible sin by committing adultery with Bathsheba.

But what does God think of David? Amazingly, God said that David was “a man after his own heart.” How can this be? How can God look on David’s life with favor after all of David’s many, high-profile sins and mistakes?

David’s life shows us exactly what God is looking for. He’s not seeking perfection, but he’s looking for us to have an ongoing relationship with Him. David’s secret wasn’t that he was superhuman or even super-spiritual. His secret was confession. Every time he failed God, he came to Him in complete and total repentance. He didn’t point a finger at someone else.

This gives us hope. Hope that we can be looked on with favor by the God of the universe—even after we mess up. The key is to fall on our face before the Almighty and beg his forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 promises that God will hear and will put our sins behind us.
