“Granddad, can I sit on your lap?” asked five-year-old Christopher. His eyes gleamed with excitement as he pulled out his never-ending Christmas list.

“Of course you can, Chris,” replied Grandfather.

Christopher jumped into his lap and began to rattle off his list. As he read, his grandfather saw a golden opportunity to impart some wisdom.

“You know, Chris, it is always better to give than to receive.”

“Oh, I know that, Granddad, but receiving is good enough for me,” retorted Christopher.

So often in life we miss the joy of giving because we are too busy receiving like Christopher. When considering all of the gifts we receive here on Earth, it is important to realize that no earthly present will last forever, as illustrated in our text. All material possessions will eventually crumble and become worthless. The only gift that lasts forever is the gift of eternal life that we receive through Jesus Christ our Lord.

During this time of merriment and festivities, it is so easy to get sidetracked by thinking, Receiving is good enough for me. As we focus on our desires, we often neglect to give the best gift of all – the gospel. Why not make it a point this season to experience the joy of giving a gift that will never fade? Tell someone about Jesus Christ.

I have tried to keep things in my hands and lost them all, but what I have given into God’s hands I still possess. – Martin Luther
