Today’s Scripture: The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets. Proverbs¬†22:13

At first glance, a lion in the streets seems like a reasonable reason to stay inside. If there was a lion outside your house, would you go about your business like nothing was wrong? Most of us would want to take extra precautions to make sure that we were safe in such an instance, but this is not the situation this verse is talking about. Rather, it is an excuse that is so blown out of proportion even the hint of potential danger keeps the lazy man from doing anything.

For example, to put this loosely into today’s terms, there were 32,719 deaths due to car accidents in 2013. That was a rate of 10.3 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.11 deaths per 100 million miles driven. There is an incredibly small chance that you will die in an accident anytime you are in a vehicle. Yet, this is probably a higher rate than the number of people who died in Israel from lion attacks.

The equivalent would be to say that because 32,719 people died in 2013 from vehicle accidents, you would never get into a car. However, just as some deaths were cars hitting pedestrians or crashing into buildings, the lion could also come and break into the house. The lazy person will find any excuse-no matter how unlikely-to convince himself that he is in the right.

Don’t make excuses for your failures! Don’t allow potential dangers to paralyze you with fear. Live knowing that God is in control.
