Today’s Scripture: And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. Genesis 37:23-24
Joseph – the man who had a roller coaster life. If you talk about someone who had very, very hard trials, you can point to Joseph. If you talk about someone whom God blessed far more than the average man, you can point to Joseph.
His journey from slavery to becoming Pharaoh’s right hand man is one that can encourage and challenge us to obey God. Joseph had unbelievable family problems. He was his father’s favorite son. This is not right, but it was not Joseph’s fault. Because he was the favorite, his ten older brothers hated him.
Due to their anger and hatred, they decided to kill Joseph. One of Joseph’s brothers, Reuben, tried to save his life. He convinced his brothers not to kill Joseph, but to throw him in a pit instead. His plan was to help Joseph out of the pit and bring him back home.
After they had cast Joseph into the pit, Reuben left for a brief time. While he was gone, the remaining brothers saw some Ishmeelites heading toward Egypt. They decided to sell Joseph as a slave to them.
You may have family problems, but you don’t have anywhere near the problems Joseph had! I am not saying that to dismiss your problem, but so you can learn from Joseph’s response and apply it to your own life.
Joseph was not angry at God for allowing his mother to die when he was young; he still served God with all his heart. Joseph didn’t hate his brothers after they forsook him; he saved his brothers’ lives in the famine, forgave them, and gave them the best opportunity to prosper in Egypt.
Do you have problems with your family, or maybe your church family? Whether it is partly your fault or not, forgive and help them anyway. God will bless you just as he blessed Josep.
