Today’s Scripture: Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour. Proverbs 14:9

My oldest granddaughter, Amy, was caught stealing her sister’s candy. When brought to question about it, Amy said, “I am not-I’m just helping her share!” Sometimes this is how we view sin-“Oh, I’m just trying to help my neighbor get back on his feet-then we’ll both start coming to church…” “Oh, I won’t let this problem get out of hand…” while never acknowledging the problem as sin.

In 1982, “ABC Evening News” reported on an unusual work of modern art – a chair affixed to a shotgun. It was to be viewed by sitting in the chair and looking directly into the gun barrel. The gun was loaded and set on a timer to fire at an undetermined moment within the next hundred years. The amazing thing was that people waited in lines to sit and stare into the shell’s path! They all knew the gun could go off at any moment, but they gambled that the fatal blast wouldn’t happen during their minute in the chair.

This sounds foolhardy, yet many people who wouldn’t dream of sitting in that chair live a lifetime gambling that they can get away with sin. Foolishly, they ignore the risk until the inevitable self-destruction.

The solution to overcoming our sin lies in acknowledging it and identifying it as a problem. Let us then confess it to the Lord and forsake our ways.
