|Today’s Scripture: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Proverbs 4:7|
|This world has so many pursuits it tells us to follow after. Many tell you the most important thing in life is an education. Others claim that wealth or power is the ultimate goal. Some just say do what makes you happy. The problem with all of these pursuits is that they are all like chasing the wind. Our knowledge is so finite and constantly changing, money or power can vanish into thin air, and happiness is forever beyond reach without God. Instead, God’s Word tells us to focus on wisdom and understanding.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines wisdom as
The problem with this definition is that it separates the aspects that are included in wisdom without explaining what wisdom really is. Wisdom is not just knowledge, insight, and judgment; wisdom is the ability to judge what is known and perceived and to act correctly upon it. Knowledge is knowing that tomatoes, hot peppers, and zucchini are botanically fruits (because they have seeds), not vegetables. Wisdom is not putting them in a fruit salad!
God tells us that we need wisdom. He encourages us to incline our ears unto wisdom and search for her as hid treasure, and then we will understand the fear of the LORD. (Proverbs 2:2-5) He also tells us, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10) Why is the “fear of the LORD” only the beginning of wisdom? It is because it still needs to be acted upon. If we truly fear the LORD, we will do the things He has said. One of God’s explanations of a wise person is, “he that winneth souls is wise.” (Proverbs 11:30b)
The reason that a soul winner is wise is because He understands that because of sin, all are destined for Hell. However, God loved us and provided a way of salvation to anyone who would believe. Knowing the fate awaiting lost souls, a wise person concludes that whatever effort must be made to reach the lost is worth it. A wise person doesn’t just know that souls are dying and going to Hell-he does something about it!
Studying the Bible is a good thing, but it is not the best thing. It isn’t until the knowledge that you have learned from Scripture is acted upon that it becomes wisdom. Why don’t you put God’s Word into action and share salvation with someone today? After all, isn’t that the wisest thing for both of you?
