Today’s Scripture: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1¬†John¬†1:9

Have you ever gone on a summer vacation only to wish you had not packed nearly so many things? It can be quite a drag to haul around the extra suitcase full of sweaters you know you’ll never wear. And if you’re the dad, inevitably, you’re the one that gets stuck with the extra bag or camera case, stroller, or diaper bag.

Christians often bring along too much baggage on the road of life. The luggage I’m referring to is not made by Samsonite nor does it have a flowery pattern. It can’t be carried on wheels, and it doesn’t fit in the overhead compartment.

I’m talking about the unnecessary weight we bring along called guilt. Even though we have confessed and forsaken a sin, we still carry it around like an extra suitcase. What we don’t realize is that God has completely forgiven us. He’s forgiven us, but sometimes we can’t forgive ourselves.

1 John 1:9 is a powerful verse – if only we would cling to it. We don’t have to live in the past of regret and despair. God wants us to shed our unnecessary luggage and press on toward the future – a future in which he still wants us to accomplish great things. You might say, “Well you don’t know what I’ve done or where I’ve been.” I don’t, but God does, and he has already forgiven you.

Have you allowed guilt to weigh you down on your journey? Thank the Lord today for His forgiveness and ask him to help you walk in His grace.
