Today’s Scripture: Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. PsalmĀ 119:10

Sam was covered in mud. It looked like he had been buried alive, not playing flag football.

“What happened?” his mother asked as she saw him approach.

“We decided to play tackle.”

As Sam headed up to shower and clean up, he looked into the mirror. The mirror didn’t help him get cleaner, but it showed him how dirty he really was. When he got into the shower, he picked up a bottle of soap. Standing in the shower and holding the bottle of soap wouldn’t help him get clean, either. Just because he has the tools to do the job doesn’t mean the job will get done. It isn’t until Sam uses the soap and water that he can be clean.

How can you clean up your life? It’s not by looking at yourself to see what is wrong. It’s not by taking the Word of God and seeing what you should do. It’s by taking the Word of God and applying it to your lives. Knowing right from wrong doesn’t get rid of the dirt in your life. It’s not until you take heed to what God has said that your life will change.

James chapter 1 tells us to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” James gives the example of someone who looks into a mirror and sees himself but does nothing about it. Looking in the mirror is useless unless he does something about what he sees.

We all have things in our lives that we need to change. Recognize what God has said in His Word, and then listen and obey, don’t just hear.
