Why do you want to go to Heaven? We ask people all the time if they know for sure they’re going to Heaven, but we don’t usually think about why we want to go there ourselves. A good answer would be that Heaven is far better than the alternative. An even better reason would be the frequent opportunities Heaven allows us to worship Jesus Christ. For all eternity we will offer Him our praise and exaltation.

If this sounds boring, it’s because we don’t really understand what worship is all about. The word “worship” comes from the Old English word “worthship.” It means to acknowledge and give worth to someone or something. Yesterday I wrote about giving worth to the right Person. Today I want to explain how to do it.

W.E. Vine defined worship in this way:

Broadly it may be regarded as a direct acknowledgment of God, of His nature, attributes, ways, and claims, whether by the outgoing of the heart in praise and thanksgiving, or by deeds done in such acknowledgment.

Worship is praise, but it doesn’t stop there. To stop there is to come up halfway short of where God wants us to be. Remember, Satan once worshipped God. True worship involves a heart of praise which overflows into our words and actions.

How are you ascribing worth to God? Have you thanked Him for waking you up this morning? Do you acknowledge His control over your life by trusting Him to get you through hardship? He loves to hear your praises. Worship Him, for He alone is worthy.

We are saved to worship God. All that Christ has done for us in the past and all that He is doing now leads to this one end. — A.W. Tozer
