Most of us grew up liking a particular kind of candy. For some, it’s Baby Ruth. Others like Snickers bars. My favorite was Meltaways. I tell you, I could have eaten those candies all day. Actually, I did once. I had so many Meltaways I got sick. I would have been a lot better off if I had shared my candy with somebody else instead of keeping it all to myself.

Giving is a big part of Christianity. The Bible tells us, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son . . .”. When God the Son came into this world, He gave of Himself to heal the sick, feed the hungry, teach the ignorant, and die for sinners. When we give to others, we’re letting God’s work continue through us.

You might be thinking, I give money and am involved in my church. What more could I possibly give? Haven’t I already done enough? It’s great to serve in your local church. Here are some other ways you can get involved:

  • Give of your time to your family. Ask your kids how things are going at school. Take a few minutes before dinner to see how your spouse’s day went.
  • Share the talents God’s given you with others in your community. If you can bake, make some bread or cookies for your neighbors. Volunteer to play a musical instrument or sing at a nursing home during the holidays.
  • Encourage someone who’s come under hard times. We all go through difficulties at some time or another. An encouraging word at the right time will go a long way.

Jesus never would have told us to give if it wasn’t good for us. Don’t hoard life’s “Meltaways”. We enjoy them best when we share them with others. Get started today.

Give strength, give thought, give deeds, give wealth;
Give love, give tears, and give thyself.
Give, give, be always giving.
Who gives not is not living;
The more you give, the more you live.
