Today’s Scripture: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. RomansĀ 1:25

In my opinion, this world is going to the dogs-literally. For example, some places have a refrigerated section of food for dogs in the grocery store. Many dogs get more pedicures done than my wife has ever had, and there are bakeries dedicated solely to making various doggy treats. There are little sweaters for them and special collars. As if that were not enough, people are crazy enough about these creatures to write new versions of creation for them, like this one:

On the first day of creation, God created the dog. On the second day, God created man to serve the dog. On the third day, God created the other animals of the earth to be potential food for the dog. On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the dog. On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might or might not retrieve it. On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog healthy and the man broke. And, on the seventh day, God tried to rest, but He had to walk the dog.

The thing that really gets me is when extreme dog-lovers say: “Do you know what God spelled backwards is? It’s dog…their name is so close to His because they are such faithful loving friends!” Now, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with you if you are a dog-lover. What I am saying is that if anything takes more of your love and attention than God does, it needs to be addressed. Sadly, many people admire their pet more than they respect the One Who created it. We have a Friend Who is far more faithful than any dog. He is the only companion Who will never leave or forsake us.

So often our focus is dedicated to what gives us the most comfort and pleasure, and it becomes our god. What do most people view as their god in this world? For many, it is attention and acceptance. Perhaps that is why dogs have become so popular. Your pet will never tell you when you are in sin, or convict you of your need to spend more time in your devotions, and of course, they are easy to spend time with and dote upon.

Christian, is God really your god, or is it something else? It may be an animal, a friend, a TV series, or hobbies that help take your mind off what is causing you pain and worry. Those things you are using to take the place of God are only going to distract you from making progress. They cannot fix whatever you are facing today. Really, you need to find your comfort in the Lord, and seek to please Him more than anything else. Let’s keep God’s name spelled in the proper order in our daily walk so that our lives don’t go to the dogs. If we do not keep God in His proper place, life is going to get rough.
