Today’s Scripture: Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. 4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. 5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5
There’s a story that has been told many times of a pastor who dropped in for a surprise visit with one of the families in the church. Eager to appear spiritual, the mother said to her daughter, “Sweetheart, go get the book that mommy always looks to for guidance.” To her horror, the daughter brought her the latest copy of the TV Guide.
While it’s doubtful if that happened, there are many homes that are centered around the kids’ activity schedules or the latest TV shows. However, if God is not the center of your home you’re going to have a hard time. Your relationships with your spouse and your children will not be what they should. If God is in the center of your life, then love will be in the center of your home.
Parents, focus your attention on your spouse and your kids. If your child is running around breaking lamps, behavior modification is in order. Parent the heart – don’t just look for behavior modification. Deal with the heart, not just the behavior. Be a good observer of facial expressions. The look on your kid’s face will tell you way more than their words. Rebellion needs to be dealt with. They won’t grow out of it, they will grow into it.
As you demonstrate God’s love in the home, remember to use words of affirmation seven times more than words of correction. The most important thing you can say to your kids is “I love you.” Love will work in your home as you demonstrate God’s love to your family.
