May we never mistake God’s longsuffering for tolerance in the area of sin. For years God had warned the nation of Israel through His prophets. If the people would turn from their sins and serve the Lord with singleness of heart, He would allow them to dwell in the Promised Land indefinitely.
But year after year, Israel chose to disregard the Word of God. Perhaps they thought to themselves, God is a gracious, loving, and longsuffering God. If He hasn’t judged us yet, He won’t judge us ever. Whatever they were thinking, they were dead wrong.
Just as the prophets had predicted, God allowed the Chaldeans, led by King Nebuchadnezzar, to attack Israel, loot her cities, and take many of the people captive. Payday had come.
Christian, you serve a longsuffering God Who is not willing that any should perish, and Who so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. He’s willing to give us a chance and allow us time. But there is coming a day when time will run out. His judgment will swiftly come. I hope you have chosen to serve Him before it’s too late.
Maybe you’ve been putting up a front every Sunday. You show up for church with a smile plastered across your face, but you know your heart isn’t right with God or someone else. God may be longsuffering towards your hypocrisy for awhile, but I submit to you that payday is coming. Get right with Him while there is still time.
You have been once more warned today, while the door of the ark yet stands open . . . Take heed therefore that you do not still stop your ears, treat these warnings with a regardless heart, and still neglect the great work which you have to do, lest the flood of wrath suddenly come upon you, sweep you away, and there be no remedy. — Jonathan Edwards
