Serving in Silence – Dr. James A. Scudder

Today’s Scripture: And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. Mark 14:13‑15

They swept the dust from the floor, arranged the table settings, straightened the window coverings, and worked without showy fanfare.

They made sure the room was furnished and prepared for the most important meal in the Bible aside from the Marriage Supper of the Lamb—the Last Supper. Their names are not mentioned in Scripture. Yet we know someone had to make ready the place in which our Lord would eat His final meal with His disciples.

What an honor and responsibility was given to these people. Imagine what you and I would feel like if given the task of preparing the room so it would be ready for Jesus and His twelve disciples.

Most of us would probably be so nervous we would have more butterflies in our stomachs than the Field Museum has in its butterfly collection. We would most likely have no idea how to get it all ready in a timely manner. But these unnamed people completed the task without human recognition or praise. Scripture simply states the room was furnished and prepared. Someone had been faithful.

Are you content to serve and not be named for recognition? It is not always easy to work in the name of the Lord without seeking human attention and admiration. But the only way in which we can bring true glory to our King is by being willing to serve wherever He places us—even if it means serving in silence.
