The Art of Hypocrisy – Jim Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.  James 3:9-10

It has become something of an embarrassment for our country. Still images and video showing people brawling over cheap electronics. People trampling their neighbor to get the best deals on door-buster items.

While the term “Black Friday” dates all the way back to the 1950’s, it wasn’t until recent years that the crowds began to become quite unruly. There has always been a history of minor scuffles, but now with the availability of social media, mobs and fights over cheap television sets can be broadcast quickly across the country.

What strikes me as ironic about this phenomenon is that it falls one day after we’ve spent time collectively as a nation, reflecting on the things we are thankful for. On Thanksgiving, people are thankful. The next day, they’re fighting over discounted electronics.

It really reminds me of today’s verse – with the tongue we bless God, and then curse men. As James puts it, “…brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

There’s nothing wrong with going shopping on Black Friday and getting a good deal. However, remember to keep things in perspective. Remember the things you were thankful for yesterday and keep that thankfulness going throughout the year.
