Our Sphere of Influence – Dr. James A. Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? Psalm 139:7

Do we live in a vacuum? A vacuum is an environment free from external influences (e.g. – heat, energy, pressure, etc.), which exerts no external influence itself. What does the Bible say about the significance of our influence, and what has the historical record taught us?

In Psalm 139, David presented an excellent case for man’s accountability to God. He was absolutely amazed that God was aware of every word, thought, and action he’d ever committed. He knew that he could never escape the presence of God. Therefore, he was inspired, not to fear, but rather to praise (vs. 14). He was devoted to fulfilling this purpose.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God set His people apart as ambassadors of light to the world around them. Jesus Himself called the Jewish people to be salt and light, taking His message of hope to the world (Matthew 5:13-16). None of us is a “black hole,” always taking in and never giving out.

It is easy to feel that our lives are our own, for us to abuse as we please. It’s also easy to excuse our conduct under the grounds that we’re only affecting ourselves. God has called us to live holy because He has a higher purpose for our lives, and He wants our influence upon others to be positive so that we can lead them into a relationship with Him.
