Should We Pray or Pack? – Jim Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. Proverbs 3:5‑7

If you had scanned the pastor’s irises, you would have seen giant dollar signs. Had he heard the man correctly? It sounded like the pastoral committee member from the out-of-state church had just offered him triple his current salary. Should he take it, or not? Reluctantly, the pastor said, “Well, I’m going to have to pray about this. Let me get back with you.”

A few weeks went by, and the pastor had not made his decision yet. One day, an elder from the out-of-state church drove by the home of the local pastor and spotted the pastor’s son playing in the driveway.

He stopped and asked the young child, “Hey there, son! Has your dad made a decision yet?”

The child replied, “Well, Dad’s praying; Mom’s packing.”

How should this family determine God’s will? How would you determine God’s will in the same circumstances? Here are a few guidelines to follow as you pursue God’s purpose:

  1. God’s infallible and all-sufficient Word should be your guide. It will remind you to perform your duty when you are tempted to follow your inclinations. General principles from God’s Word can also help you with your decision-making.
  2. Seek godly counsel. The advice of godly people will prove invaluable. Others may be able to see things you have overlooked because of your emotional involvement in a given situation.
  3. Don’t put out “fleeces” when God has already made His will clear. God usually responds by saying yes, no, or wait. If He has clearly closed the door, then don’t try to get through a window. If He has opened a door, then don’t hesitate to walk through it. If the outcome is unclear, then serve Him faithfully until He reveals the next step you should take.

God has promised to direct your path, Christian. You may not know every detail of His plan at every moment; but if you follow Him with as much light as He gives you each day, then you will never be led astray.
