Today’s Scripture: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Matthew 3:17‑4:1
You can’t live on the mountaintop. We’ve all been there at one time or another. Winning a trophy at a big tournament… graduating from high school or college… the wedding day… the first day on a new job… the birth of a child… a big promotion… the first day in the new house… a huge answer to prayer… recognition received for a job well done. All of these experiences give us great memories and good feelings.
But we can’t live on the mountaintops of life. The view from the mountaintop may be great, but the air is thin. Soon we have to return to the valley. This happened to Jesus shortly after His Father publicly praised Him. God said, “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” I can’t think of a better way to start out in ministry.
After Jesus received these words of praise, the Holy Spirit led Him up to the wilderness where He would be tempted by Satan. Satan’s temptations took the form of three shortcuts to the glory that was waiting for Him after the Cross. Thankfully for us, Christ resisted each temptation. From this situation, we can learn that we will also face attacks from our enemy after our mountaintop experiences — and we can overcome the Devil just like Jesus did.
Go ahead and enjoy the mountaintops of life — but remember that you have to live in the valleys. Here your strength will be tested. Your faith will grow. And if you don’t give in to temptation, you will be victorious.
