Today’s Scripture: Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. LukeĀ 12:6-7

You’ll usually hear the phrase “God knows the number of hairs on your head,” used as the set-up for a joke (the punchline being: “Though some were blessed with more hair than others.”) But behind this glib statement lies a powerful, comforting truth, albeit, one that is fortunately not about baldness or receding hairlines.

God has the very hairs of your head numbered. This is not just a statement about the omniscience of God-although it does show that. Christ’s main point in these verses is that God is so invested and interested in each one of us as individuals we cannot lose a hair off our head without Him being aware of it. The average adult loses between fifty to one hundred hairs a day. Each time that happens, God knows. He values you so much that it is worth His time and attention to know. What a comforting and awe-inspiring realization!

So often, when we’re in trials and difficult times, we feel abandoned and neglected. We wonder if God has forgotten us or left us to deal with a harsh circumstance on our own. But God’s Word tells us this is simply not the case. Therefore, we need to cast those feelings aside by remembering this great truth Christ gave to us. God hasn’t abandoned us. He will never abandon us. He loves and values us so much we never escape his notice. But this truth goes so much farther still. God is so attentive that nothing that happens to us, no matter how small or minute, can escape His notice.

Perhaps you’ve been feeling neglected or abandoned by God. Don’t let yourself feel that way. Remind yourself of the promises of Scripture and take comfort in them. Don’t doubt God. You can rest secure in His love and attention. No matter the hardship, God will bring you through it. He loves and values you far too much to fail you.
