Fred had a problem. Still single at 32 years of age, he started to worry his chances of getting married were slim. His friend asked, “How come you are still single? Have you had trouble finding a girl that would be a good wife?”
Fred shook his head and said, “No, I’ve found plenty of them.”
“What’s the problem?”
“Every time I bring one home to my mother, she doesn’t like her, so I have to start all over.”
Fred’s wise friend said, “Here’s a suggestion: Go out and find a woman that’s just like your mother. Bring her home, and your mother will like her.”
Sure enough, Fred searched and searched until he found a woman just like his mother. He brought her home and his mother liked her. But a few months later, he remained unattached. His friend asked again, “Why are you still not married? Didn’t you take my advice?”
“Yes, I found a girl just like Mom.”
“Did you bring her home to your mom?”
“I sure did.”
“Didn’t your mom like her?”
“Mom loved her.”
“So what’s the problem?”
“She was so much like Mom, Dad didn’t like her.”
When Christians are led by the Holy Spirit, they may still have conflict with their earthly families, but never with their Heavenly Father. Their decisions please their Father, their desires match their Father’s will, their service is motivated by love for their Father, their steps follow Him wherever He leads, and their lives are testimonies to the changes God is making within them. God is leading them rather than driving them. They delight to willingly follow.
How have you been responding to the Holy Spirit’s work in your life? Are you allowing His light to penetrate your heart and reveal areas where your will is reigning? You will have no dread of conflict when you are led by the Spirit. Determine you will submit to His leading.
