Today’s Scripture: The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.
Psalm 33:11-13

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of fasting and prayer. Here is a short excerpt of his moving speech:

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven… But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!”

The same truth that Abraham Lincoln was burdened about applies to our nation now more than ever before. We have forgotten God. From having an endless amount of technology, to possessing more wealth than other countries could even dream of, we have been blessed beyond measure. Yet, we are far from giving the Lord the credit He deserves. That does not go unseen by God. In fact, in our text we read that He looks down from heaven and observes all the sons of men. Our lack of gratitude does not go unnoticed either.

Do you ever find yourself taking our freedom and wealth for granted? Have you ever considered how graciously God has blessed our undeserving nation? Today, why not just set aside time to thank the Lord for the rich blessings He has bestowed upon you? Give Him the glory He deserves.
