A gentleman from another church stopped by our church to speak with me. They were in the midst of a building program. He was in charge of technical things and had heard that I had similar responsibilities on our building project, and he wanted to ask me some questions.
After we discussed business, I asked him if he knew for sure that he was going to heaven when he died. He assured me that he was. I asked him how he knew that. He said that he knew because he trusted Jesus as his personal savior. I then asked him if he could lose his salvation. Without delay, he said that he could lose it. I asked him what it would take for him to lose it. He said that if he sinned then he would lose his salvation. I then asked some questions to get him to think. How many sins would you have to commit to lose your salvation, and how serious would those sins have to be? When you lose your salvation, how do you get it back? His answers indicated that he never really thought about this before.
I shared John 3:16 and asked if God gave him everlasting life. He said that God did give him everlasting life, so I asked how long is everlasting. His prolonged thought told me that he took this question quite seriously. After some reflection, his expression changed and he said, “I see it! I can’t lose salvation because it’s everlasting. I never saw that before.” Afterwards, he asked me if he could have a tract for his wife!
The truth of God’s word became clear to him, and he found a joy that can only come from truly understanding God’s word.
