Someone wrote this variation of the hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers”. It reveals much of what’s wrong with the church today.

Backward, Christian soldiers, fleeing from the fight,
With the cross of Jesus nearly out of sight.
Christ our rightful Master stands against the foe,
Onward into battle we seem afraid to go.

Like a mighty tortoise moves the church of God,
Brothers, we are treading where we’ve often trod.
We are much divided; many bodies we,
We have different doctrines, but no charity.

Crowns and thorns may perish, kingdoms arise and wane
But the cross of Jesus hidden does remain.
Gates of Hell should never against the church prevail,
We of Christ don’t promise, but we think that it might fail!

Sit here then, ye people. Join our sleeping throng,
Blend with our voices in feeble song.
Blessings, ease, and comfort, as from Christ the King
But with our modern thinking, we don’t do a blessed thing.

Backward, Christian soldiers, fleeing from the fight,
With the cross of Jesus nearly out of sight.

Friend, as long as we allow anger, bitterness, division, hypocrisy, and prejudice in the church, we will never move ahead as a united body against the devil. Read that again. Take a long, hard look at your life—are any of these sins keeping you from helping the body of Christ advance? Commit your struggles to God in prayer so you can start moving onward today.

As we draw nearer to Christ, we shall be drawn nearer to His people; and in our search for unity with the members we shall be drawn closer to the Head. — G.T. Manley
