It will be wonderful when we experience the blessed inheritance promised us in Heaven—a place where there will be no more tears, suffering, pain, or death. But why wait? Abraham took hold of eternal life and saw through the eyes of faith the eternal city God had prepared for him. As a direct result of Abraham’s faith, God allowed him to enjoy many blessings in his lifetime.
We will not experience the fullness of our eternal inheritance until Heaven, but we can enjoy the lively hope now. This is what it means to “lay hold on eternal life”. Dwelling upon the future, incorruptible, undefiled nature of our inheritance brings comfort, peace, and joy even amidst the frequent challenges of life.
Yet Abraham was not content to experience the blessings of faith for himself. He passed his heavenly vision on to his descendants, and they laid hold of the same hope. God expects us to impart our spiritual vision to our families so the benefits of our salvation will overflow into their lives.
If you have experienced the peace of God and the joy of salvation, you know how precious these blessings are. But does your husband or wife know how to experience these same blessings? Can your children understand why you’re always so happy? Impart your vision so those closest to you can lock onto the daily benefits of salvation. Help them take hold of the blessings God gives today.
The mind of Christ is to be learned in the family. Strength of character may be acquired at work, but beauty of character is learned at home. There the affections are trained. — Henry Drummond
