I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me. Now, at the end of three years struggle the nation’s condition is not what either party, or any man devised, or expected. God alone can claim it. —President Abraham Lincoln*
We don’t have as much control over our lives as we think. When we breathe, our lungs inhale oxygen and send it throughout our bodies. Where did the oxygen come from? How does it sustain life? What prevents the law of gravity from failing, causing you to float to the ceiling? How is the sun’s heat able to maintain a suitable temperature for life when it’s 93 million miles away?
We take so many things for granted—food, clothing, air, even life itself. But we often fail to realize God has graciously provided it all. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, both created and sustains all we see in our world. Colossians 1:17 says, “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” This sheds a different light on our circumstances, doesn’t it?
Do you struggle with looming deadlines at work, a heavy workload at school, or children at home? Circumstances don’t have to control you. God is in control, and your life is in His hands. Let Him claim it.
