Today’s Scripture: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Daniel 1:8

Captured and taken to a foreign land, Daniel and his friends found themselves hundreds of miles from their families. Despite the circumstances they faced, they stayed true to the things they had learned. Daniel and his friends determined not to defile themselves by eating food that was not part of the Jewish dietary law. Although they were hundreds of miles from home, prisoners in a foreign land, and knew no one else would know, they would not give in to the temptation.

These young men made wise and intelligent decisions. They determined to serve God rather than man. Daniel had probably gone through some scenarios beforehand in his mind. He realized that eating from the king’s table would likely mean eating food that was not part of the Jewish dietary laws. He determined that he would not go against the things he knew were right. Though he could have made excuses, he chose to take a stand.

It is so important to have the proper attitude ahead of time so when that temptation comes, we will have an answer. When temptation comes, we need to stand and say, “I will not defile myself.” We need to make the choice ahead of time to do right. We should not use the fact that we are sinners as an excuse for sin.

Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were young men, but they would not give in to sin. Serving God doesn’t just happen by accident; it requires a conscious decision. Let’s determine to obey God today no matter what temptation we face.
