Today’s Scripture: 1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 John 5:13

They say that there are only two things in life that are certain – death and taxes. While there are legal ways to minimize your tax burden, so far no one has found a way to cheat death. It is a certainty that we will all one day face the end of our life on this earth. However, even more certain than death or taxes is the certainty that we can have in our eternal life.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not…”

“Should not” – two of the strongest words of assurance when given by God. The Greatest One offers us the greatest certainty of eternal life when we put our trust in His Son. As we see in our Scripture passage today, when we believe on the name of the Son of God, we can know we have eternal life. We don’t hope we’ll get eternal life one day; we know we have it.

We know we have it first of all because God has said so. He cannot lie. Secondly, we know we have it because He does the saving and the keeping. There is nothing about salvation that is dependent on us. The work has been completed on the cross of Calvary.

There is no assurance like the assurance that when we face the certainty of death, ou will spend eternity with our wonderful Lord. Having that certainty helps to ease the struggles that we face in life and gives us confidence to keep living for Him.
