Today’s Scriptures: Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. Hebrews 13:13
This ministry has had a heart for India for many years. My dad has had a great burden for India and to this day, Victory In Grace supports Solid Rock Theological Seminary in India. This school is training pastors who are going all over India and the surrounding countries to start churches.
In India, there is a caste system based on the Hindu religion. This system is outlawed but it is still widely practiced. Hindus believe in reincarnation and depending on your actions in a previous life, you are born into a certain caste. The caste determines your employment, your status in society, and your general wellbeing.
The lowest caste is what many call the untouchables. This caste is basically considered sub-human. They make a living doing the terrible jobs nobody else will do, such as shoveling sewage. People in a higher caste cannot touch these individuals, and in some cases, can’t even go under the shadow of one of these people. They can’t go to the same places or drink from the same well. It is a serious, serious problem that only the gospel can fix.
Can you imagine being under this kind of oppression? Well, we know from our text we ought to be willing to suffer the reproach that our Lord suffered. The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were being ostracized from their society for breaking away from tradition and believing in Christ. Many of them could no longer even get a job, and all of them were persecuted in some form.
I believe Paul was the author of Hebrews. He reminded the Jewish believers how Christ suffered. Paul showed them that even when they were labeled “untouchable” by the world, they should be willing to suffer the reproach their Savior suffered for them.
This is just as true today. Are you willing to suffer for Christ and bear His reproach? Would you be willing to be labeled “an untouchable” for the sake of the gospel?
