Today’s Scripture: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14

Marriage is one of the most important decisions a person can make in their life. The reason is you are choosing with whom you will spend the rest of your life. It is a picture of God’s love for the church. This is why God is so concerned with marriage. Because it is a picture of Him, He is concerned with how we present Him to the world.

God instituted marriage in Genesis in the Garden of Eden. When two people are married the Bible says “they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24) This is why God commands us to “be ye separate.” (2 Corinthians 6:17) He asks, “What fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness or light with dark?” They are opposites – they cannot become one.

God commands us not to get involved in marriages with those who will cause us harm. In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites not to marry the inhabitants of Canaan because it would turn them to idols and “they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes.” God has a reason for telling us whom we should marry or not marry – He loves us and wants what’s best.

An old Puritan preacher once said, “If you are a child of God and you marry a child of the devil, you can expect to have trouble with your father-in-law.” Your families will obviously not get along. Don’t put yourself in that situation, follow God’s plan for marriage.

God has a plan for each and every person. Don’t ruin your life because you thought you knew better. Don’t go against what God says, He knows the consequences and pain you will suffer if you do. Follow His plan and you will live happily ever after.
